MEET HEATHER
I am a distinguished professional with a rich background of almost 40 years experience in mental health and family service agency settings, where I have dedicated my career to working with children and their families. I possess expertise in trauma assessment and treatment for preschoolers, latency-aged children, and adolescents. I am also skilled in providing sexualized behaviour assessments and treatments for children under 12, as well as, risk assessment and treatment for adolescents who commit sexual offences. Additionally, I have worked within family service agencies supporting adults who have experienced these issues in childhood. Specifically, I focus on intrafamilial sexual abuse, both sibling sexual abuse and caregiver-child sexual abuse (incest). I am a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals, New Brunswick Association of Social Workers, and the Association for the Treatment and Prevention of Sexual Abuse. Since 2008, I have been an esteemed faculty member at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, where I support conversations on professional competence, ethics, communication, and the social determinants of health. I am a respected speaker who has presented both locally and internationally on topics such as sibling sexual abuse, concerning sexual behaviours in children, and adolescents who have committed sexual offences. As an author, I have contributed to my field with publications including a guidebook titled “Let's Talk About Touching”, aimed at clinicians working with children displaying concerning sexual behaviours, “Sexual Decision Making: Your Personal Code”, a guide for clinicians assisting youth who have committed a sexual offence, and "My Digital Journey", a non-judgmental and developmentally appropriate reflective tool to help understand and chronicle a youth’s digital experiences. Additionally, I have written a therapeutic children’s book, “Body Book: Private Parts Have a Reason”, which serves as a resource to foster understanding and healthy attitudes towards body awareness among children.
